In today’s post, I’ll be discussing the value of living a life of service to others.
Making money matters. Having your needs met matters. Achieving your vision matters. Turning your dreams into reality matters. But if you aren’t looking for ways to improve the lives of those around you—your family, your community, your environment, and the world—then what’s the point of it all?
There is immense value in giving back. It’s not about looking good or doing it because you feel obligated. True service comes from gratitude and love. The reality is that it took an army of people to help shape you into the person you are today. None of us succeeds alone.
As James Clear said:
“The easiest way to live a short, unimportant life is to consume the world around you rather than contribute to it.”
And as Nelson Mandela wisely said:
“There is no passion to be found in playing small and settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.”
When your life revolves only around yourself, your bank account, or your own ambitions, your perspective becomes too small. Real fulfillment comes when your success becomes a blessing to others.
Find ways to give back through your time, your talents, or your resources.
Write down one simple thing you can do today to serve your community, your family, your friends, or even a complete stranger. Service doesn’t have to be grand. It can begin with a simple act of kindness.
Hold the door open for someone. Buy flowers for a stranger. Offer a genuine compliment. Pay for someone’s coffee. Help someone in need. Call a friend who may be struggling. Volunteer your time. Or simply smile at the people you encounter throughout your day.
Choose to give with a positive purpose. Whether your act of kindness is noticed or never seen, you’ll immediately experience the intrinsic reward that comes from serving others.
Start small with daily acts of kindness, then build from there. Over time, serving others becomes more than something you do—it becomes part of who you are. Few things are more fulfilling than knowing you’ve made someone else’s day a little brighter.
Every area of your life should include an element of service. It can be as simple as greeting everyone you meet with kindness or as significant as dedicating your life to a cause greater than yourself. There is no right or wrong level of giving. The important thing is to give from a place of love, not guilt.
Remember the preflight safety instructions every flight attendant gives before takeoff:
Put your own oxygen mask on first.
When your own needs are cared for and your cup is full, you’ll have even more energy, wisdom, and capacity to pour into the lives of others.
Success is meaningful. Significance is unforgettable.
Live a life of service.
Go out today and make life an adventure, friends.
