In today’s post, I’ll be sharing some insights on how to build a winning team in your life and in your business.
Cultivating strong relationships is one of the foundational building blocks of greatness. The best companies thrive because of great teams, and the strongest families are built on the same principle. Success is rarely a solo achievement.
Surround yourself with greatness. Choose the members of your inner circle carefully because you’ll rarely outperform the people you spend the most time with. If you want greater success on the outside, start by improving the people around you on the inside.
Our potential for success is deeply influenced by those we allow into our lives. As the saying goes, you become the average of the five people you spend the most time with—for better or for worse.
Legendary basketball coach John Wooden once said:
“You show me your friends, and I’ll show you your future.”
Those words still ring true today. Great men and women surround themselves with people who challenge them, inspire them, and hold them accountable. They build relationships with individuals who encourage growth rather than discourage ambition. Be cautious of people who constantly drain your energy, limit your thinking, or make you feel guilty for dreaming bigger.

Find the right mentors. Without wise guidance, we’re like an unguided missile headed toward an uncertain destination. We may eventually arrive where we want to be, but only if everything goes perfectly—and life rarely works that way. A great mentor helps you set the right course, navigate adversity, avoid costly mistakes, and stay focused when challenges arise.
We are so heavily influenced by the people around us that we can’t afford to leave our relationships to chance. Being intentional about choosing mentors, friends, business partners, and teammates may be one of the most important decisions you make on your journey to greatness.
Look for mentors who not only inspire you but also tell you the truth. The best mentors encourage you, challenge you, and help you grow by giving honest feedback—not just compliments.
As Edmund Lee wisely said:
“Surround yourself with the dreamers and the doers, the believers and the thinkers, but most of all, surround yourself with those who see greatness within you even when you don’t see it yourself.”
Build meaningful relationships with positive, growth-minded people. Invest in a network that challenges you to become your best while supporting your journey.
You cannot win the game of life alone. Know when it’s time to distance yourself from relationships that no longer align with your purpose or contribute to your growth. Protect your environment because your environment shapes your future.
People matter. Behind every great accomplishment is a team of people who believed, encouraged, and contributed along the way. Let people know they matter. Show appreciation. Invest in others. Look for ways to create win-win relationships where everyone grows together.
Relationships are one of life’s greatest investments. The quality of your life and your business will often reflect the quality of the people you choose to build them with.
Finally, remember this:
To attract All-Star players to your team, you must first become an All-Star yourself.
Do the work. Improve your attitude. Develop your character. Sharpen your skills. Stay humble. Be dependable. Bring value wherever you go. When you consistently become someone others can trust and rely on, the right people will naturally want to build with you.
Great teams don’t happen by accident. They are built one relationship, one decision, and one investment at a time.
Go out today and make life an adventure, friends.
